“So how was your first time?” Sterling perched on the edge of Hope’s bed and played with her hair, finger combing out the knots. Her adventurous cousin had gotten home late. Third time this week. Maybe she was seeing someone too?

“Ask me in twenty years. Maybe I’ll have lost my virginity by then.” She pounded her fist on the down pillow she had tried desperately to fall asleep on for the past two hours, to no avail.

“Oh, Hope.” Her cousin unclenched the fingers trembling in her hold as she rescued the poor bedding from further abuse. “What happened? I thought for sure…”

“They realized I had no experience pretty quick. Up until then it was great, and the stuff after, I wouldn’t turn it down if they offered to do it again.” She sighed. “But full-out sex, they wouldn’t. Not tonight. Not in the barn. Maybe never.”

“Damn men with a sense of chivalry. Didn’t that bullshit die out a century ago?” Sterling knew just how to cheer her up. “Recreational sex between consenting adults is one of the few perks to being a grown up. It’s not all I’d imagined as a kid. Work. Bills. Worrying about our family and friends. Life is…a lot. Sex is the best anxiety reliever I know of. Can’t they just toss you a bang and move on?”

“I know, right?” Hope didn’t dare admit, maybe even to herself, that she had her sights set on a hell of a lot more than a physical exchange. As badly as her body wanted to revolt right now, Wy and Clay had endeared themselves to her even more with their show of tenderness and caution. Damn them.

They’d cared for her and refused to disrespect her, at least in their understanding of the world. She couldn’t truly fault them for that, could she?

“I’m done with chasing them, Sterling.” She sighed as she melted into her comfortable bed, less on edge once her mind was made up. “If they want traditional mixed with their ménage, then they’re going to have to come for me.”

“Oh, make them grovel.” Sterling tucked in beside Hope, sensing she didn’t relish the thought of being alone. “Maybe even insist on some wooing.”

“What the hell does that even mean?” Hope laughed as she smacked her cousin with her pillow.

“I don’t know. It’s something Vivi says. Like ‘courting’. Or ‘going steady’.” Sterling sighed. “It sounds kind of romantic. Old fashioned and simpler than the world we live in.”

Hope didn’t have it in her to ask about the source of Sterling’s disgruntlement. She would save that discussion for another time, when she could lend her full attention and support. Tonight, they both seemed content to let it drop while they each dreamed about what would make them happiest.

“Good night, Hope.”

“Night, Sterling. I’m so glad the Compass Girls are all girls.”

“Dumbass.” Sterling giggled, a sound rare for the more mature member of their group. “Go to sleep.”

They both drifted off with smiles on their faces.
